When researching this Facebook Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Tips page, I got a good look at what others are touting as the best practice strategy and how to go about optimizing your Facebook page to boost ranking and traffic to your website. The thing is that there's only so many good ideas to be found. After that they keep bringing up the same tips over and over again. I wrote this article to try and separate the wheat from the chaff.

Internet marketing is undergoing a fundamental shift in how sites are ranked.  This signifies a marked deviation of the dominant social networking and social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others are enhancing countless marketers online activity and therefore optimization.  With this in mind, I've come up with five very useful Facebook SEO tips that can help you get found quicker and easier just by using a social media network. These five points punctuate the role that Facbook and other social media play in search engine optimization.

Facebook SEO Tips: 1. Networking Wider

According to popular literature, it's not only wider (non-friends) Facebook search that matters, but also your friends, friends of friends, networks and networks of friends. This is because they are likely to trust you more since you're "local."  It's truly amazing to be able to grasp the implications of a "trusted local personal search network." As a user or searcher, be aware of how Facebook search privacy settings function.

Facebook SEO Tips: 2. New Internal Search Engine

As of March of this year, Facebook has installed a new internal search engine that will allow "outside" sources such as the major search engines to be able to find elements on Facebook. In other words, it allows non-users access to information previously found only on Facebook. This is where the privacy setting in your Facebook account becomes crucial. If you change the setting to "everyone", an outside search engine can find your information readily. This also holds true with wall posts and status updates and is indexed in real time.

Facebook SEO Tips: 3.

Use the other tools Facebook provides for us regarding user's common social graphs. By creating social ads on Facebook, a marketer has access to graphs and trends. This can be another good way to tap into user demographics and buying habits. Good examples of these are Lexicon and the paid search platform, which gives updated insight into what's buzzing.  Information of this type is worth its weight in gold and is crucial as the major search engines seek out new content in social networking platforms.

Facebook SEO Tips: 4. Contribute Valuable Content

Contributing valuable content on a continuous basis is the best thing a serious marketer can do.  A good portion of the physical search results are made up of social graph points generated within the last 30 days.  This is why smaller on-going content creation through feeds and updates can often trump a larger but infrequent style of content updating.

Facebook SEO Tips: 5. Participate Regularly

In addition to wall posts, get into the habit of participating in updating status feeds, notes, and links.  Controversially, notes and links are rarely used, but can be effective when considering the time they take to complete.  Notes, or small blog posts are often in the form of small, bite-sized posts and links that can include your youtube videos, affiliate offers or press releases.  These areas are simple and fast to update.

At the end of the day, the above Facebook SEO tips are just the tip of the iceberg, but can give you a good start. Remember to follow the tried and true elements of social media participation: Give back more than you take by contributing valuable and recurrent content.  By following this theme and the five steps listed above, you will be well on your way to Facebook optimization.
